Historically compiling a legal salary survey has been a relatively easy and regular part of the role of a Legal Recruiter. Information has been readily available and with very clear bandings and patterns. More recently the market is changing. The last few years in particular have seen a big increase in firms actively looking to add to busy teams and finding recruiting more and more difficult. Firms are keen to attract new and retain key talent, in their teams. This is pushing the salary boundaries. And with hybrid working widely available, firms are aware the big salaries and bright lights of other cities are also more tempting to the region’s talent.

The team at Rampling Clarke work closely with the Norfolk Legal firms and the current recruitment market remains extremely candidate led. The team are reporting that the more traditional legal salary bandings are stretching, and that salaries and packages are widely being considered on individual basis.

Salaries in the region have been steadily increasing. We are seeing more and more additional incentives and some varied and interesting rewards and benefits emerging. This year we feel it is sensible to highlight the regions NQ baselines as a starting point to consider salaries and uplifts as your PQE increases, as well as provide an overview of the regions Legal Executive and Paralegal salaries too.

If you have any queries on your own renumeration package and would like to arrange a confidential discussion, the team at Rampling Clarke are always happy to talk through our knowledge of the Norfolk Market and the comparables locally.

Legal Executives
A Market Overview

Senior and experienced Legal Executives are seeing extremely competitive salaries from the National Firms, Commercial and Regional Leaders as well as the Market and Coastal firms. Firms take in to account many factors when considering salaries and senior Legal Executives now occupy many management positions across the region. Many firms are supporting and encouraging staff to take the CILEX route to qualification and salaries are very dependent on individual journeys. Entry level and trainee legal executive salaries are also dependant on whether study fees are included with the role with many firms funding this route to qualification too.

A Market Overview

The Norfolk region is known for recognising the Paralegal talent. Salaries for Specialist and Senior Paralegals are increasing dramatically with city centre Firms and the Market and Coastal town Firms too.

The team at Rampling Clarke are actively working with a number of firms looking to recruit at Senior and Partner level, who are very open to Paralegal applications. Over recent years we have seen firms changing business structure to ensure these positions are open to Paralegals also.

Many firms remain keen to recruit Paralegals to support their fee earning teams at entry level. Starting salaries range from approximately £18K – £26K. Entry level paralegal salaries depend heavily on the future plans and whether a route to qualification is available with the role too.

Considering Salaries:

When considering salaries firms are now looking at the wider picture, the current market, and moving away from simply level of PQE banding: –

Area of Practice

Practice has always been a key consideration. At present, the demand for Private Client Lawyers at all levels is resulting in more competitive salaries.

Agricultural Law is at the heart of the region. However, a current shortage of professionals in this area of law means many firms are managing busy workloads and looking to recruit. This can result in impressive salaries.

Commercial Property Law is also seeing an increase in work and the increase in demand for fee earning induvials continues to rise locally and further afield.

Additional Skills

Lawyers and support staff with additional skills are extremely attractive to firms and result in additional salary negotiations. You may like to consider your experience of the following: –

  • Client care and service, including feedback, referrals, and recommendations
  • Business development, generating new work and cross-referrals
  • Mentoring and managing teams
  • Online presence and promotion
  • Impressive and proven fee-earning
